Over the last few days I’ve driven to multiple junkyards in multiple states to piece together a new set of seats for my new ‘98 Mustang GT. I’ve assembled a near mint condition set of leather sport seats from various New Edge 2000 Mustang GTs for all of $125 total (excluding gas and time).

New Edge leather seats installed

New seats and heavily cleaned dash. I really like the new edge cobra shift knob.

These seats replace very worn out Megan Racing bucket fronts and original grey cloth-dyed-black rear seats.

Old race buckets. Note the torn bolsters, they were down to the frame and painful to sit on

Old cloth rear seat. Originally grey, the previous owner dyed them black to match the buckets

One benefit of the new seats is an increase of adjustability over both OEM 1998 seats and the racing buckets. These new edge seats have 8-way adjustability which is more than even my 2019 truck has! To make the wiring fit I made an adapter using the body side seat pigtail from a donor junkyard 2000 mustang harness. The 1998 seats have a two pin connector (power and ground) and the 2000 has a four pin (main power, bolster/tilt power, seatbelt power, and ground). I soldered the main and tilt powers together, and the ground and seatbelt power together (unnecessary for this application) then added spade terminals which fit into the stock 1998 harness.

Adapter harness between 1998 and 2000 mustang seats. Two pin to four pin.

Today I am going to get new tires installed and am repairing a cracked center console lid. After that all I have to do is replace a couple broken rubber exhaust hangers and pull the bodyside dents.

You’re going to have to rename this project. This is probably the least crustiest ‘98 Mustang GT around.

I have found this chronicle of your pony car exploits very interesting. So few of these cars get anywhere near this level of attention and care. Good work!

Thanks! I’ve never worked on modern cars before, they’re  so much easier to work on than old rusty muscle cars which I find is a great motivator to get stuff done. Plus parts are so cheap for this car that even after all the work done and parts I’ve bought I’m still sub-$2500 total investment.

Too bad the cheaper the Mustang the more extortionist insurance becomes when you are a young guy, even with a spotless record. There are tons of these in every pick n pull in the country and you can get a solid base dirt cheap. I didn’t know quite how little you were in on this build for. You could make a pretty penny fixing these up and flipping them, since that is probably worth $3,500 on a good day now.

Your post got me looking at the Wikipedia page for this car and

For 1998, the 4.6 L V8 received a small increase in output, resulting in 225 hp (168 kW; 228 PS) at 4750 rpm and 290 lbft (393 Nm) of torque at 3500 rpm.

Wow...I didn’t realize how under powered this era of Mustangs were. I mean the fifth gen GT debuted with 300HP...that’s a 33% increase in power.

It’s kind of sad that it took over 30 years for Ford to match the numbers of the first gen due to emissions regulations

The Mustang GT version was introduced as the “GT Equipment Package” and included a V8 engine (most often the 225 hp, 168 kW, 228 PS “289")

We truly are living in the golden age of power. Most commuter sedans have some engine option making more than 225HP these days.

Especially sad is in 1998 the LS1 came out in the Camaro rated at 305hp! But those are sadly way pricier...
